Why is the Mutiny Memorial called Ajitgarh now?
Originally built by the British in 1863 to honor those—British and Indian—who died suppressing the 1857 uprising, it was renamed Ajitgarh (“Place of the Unvanquished”) in 1972, marking the 25th anniversary of India’s independence. The new name and plaque redefine the “enemy” inscriptions, honoring the Indian freedom fighters as martyrs instead .
